Algeria Celebrates 71st Anniversary of Liberation War

Algeria commemorated the 71st anniversary of the outbreak of its War of Liberation with a series of events, as reported by the Algerian Press Agency (APS). A central event was the ceremony held at the People’s Palace, presided over by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who also serves as the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defense. During the ceremony, President Tebboune bestowed honors upon a number of Brigadier Generals and Colonels in recognition of their service.

The anniversary, marking the beginning of the struggle for independence on November 1, 1954, holds immense significance for Algeria. The events serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made during the war and the values that underpin the nation’s identity.

Earlier in the day, President Tebboune paid tribute to the martyrs of the revolution at the Martyrs’ Memorial, a solemn occasion to honor those who gave their lives for Algeria’s freedom. The President’s presence at both the award ceremony and the memorial underscored the importance the government places on remembering and celebrating the nation’s history.

The Algerian Press Agency has also been active in covering other key events. Recently, the Minister overseeing official media in Palestine visited the APS headquarters, highlighting the strong ties between the two nations. Furthermore, the Prime Minister inaugurated the 28th Algiers International Book Fair (SILA), a major cultural event attracting participants from across the globe.

APS also reported on the key outcomes of the Council of Ministers meeting held on October 19, 2025, providing insight into the government’s priorities and policy decisions. The agency has also focused on historical events, including the massacres of October 17, 1961, highlighting them as state crimes committed with premeditation by the French colonial authorities. The coverage emphasizes the need to remember the atrocities of the past and to learn from them.

Looking towards the future, APS has reported on plans for the complete modernization of the country and the People’s National Army by 2026. This ambitious project reflects Algeria’s commitment to progress and development.

In addition to domestic affairs, APS covers international relations. Recent reports include the outcomes of the first session of the Algerian-Slovenian Joint Governmental Committee, demonstrating Algeria’s engagement with the international community.

The Algerian Press Agency continues to play a vital role in informing the public about important events and developments in Algeria and beyond. Its coverage of the 71st anniversary of the War of Liberation and other significant issues underscores its commitment to providing comprehensive and timely news.
