FAF Considers Sweeping Reforms to National Football Competition

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) is currently reviewing a comprehensive proposal to overhaul the national football competition system. The Federal Bureau recently convened to analyze a report submitted by a dedicated committee tasked with developing revisions to the existing structure.

The meeting, chaired by FAF President Walid Sadi, took place at the technical center in Sidi Moussa, Algiers. The core focus was a detailed examination of the committee’s report outlining proposed modifications to the competitive landscape.

According to a statement released by the FAF, the report advocates for an approach that balances economic and sporting considerations. The primary objective is to facilitate easier participation for clubs across various competitions, while simultaneously minimizing the financial burdens and operational expenses associated with their involvement.

Furthermore, the proposed system includes the establishment of a new regional league in Tamanrasset. It also envisions the reintegration of certain local leagues into regional frameworks, aiming to streamline operations and improve resource allocation.

The report will be initially presented to the National Technical Assembly for discussion and refinement. Subsequently, it will be shared with all relevant stakeholders for extensive consultations. This collaborative approach ensures that all perspectives are considered before any final decisions are made regarding the adoption of the new competition format by the Federal Bureau and the FAF General Assembly.

The proposed structure detailed in the report revolves around six distinct levels:

  • Ligue 1: A single group of 16 clubs.
  • Ligue 2: A single group of 18 clubs.
  • Ligue 3: Two groups of 18 clubs each.
  • Regional Division (Ligue 4): One group of 16 clubs per region.
  • Honor Division: A single group with a minimum of 10 clubs.
  • Pre-Honor Division: Multiple groups with a minimum of 6 clubs each.

The FAF believes that these changes will lead to a more sustainable and competitive football environment across Algeria.
