The General Directorate of Civil Protection launched its annual field exercise for managing major disasters in Bouira province this Saturday. The exercise, part of the practical activity plan for 2025, commenced at 4:00 AM, simulating a high-intensity earthquake scenario.
The exercise, titled “Developing the Capabilities of Rescue Teams for International Intervention,” will run from November 8th to 12th across various locations in the province. The scenario involves a simulated 7.2 magnitude earthquake striking several cities in a foreign country, prompting a request for international assistance.
Participating in the exercise is the HUSAR (Heavy Urban Search and Rescue) team from the Algiers Directorate, along with four MUSAR (Medium Urban Search and Rescue) teams from the provinces of Blida, Bouira, Medea, and Boumerdes. Participants aim to achieve certification in accordance with the standards of the United Nations’ INSARAG (International Search and Rescue Advisory Group).
The Civil Protection’s Air Unit, medical and logistical support teams, and operational communication teams are also participating to ensure a comprehensive simulation of emergency conditions. The exercise aims to enhance field readiness, strengthen operational coordination between teams, and develop intervention capabilities according to internationally recognized search and rescue standards.
This initiative underscores Civil Protection’s commitment to effectively and efficiently respond to major disasters. The simulation will allow teams to test their disaster response protocols and coordination in a realistic environment. The exercise will help identify areas for improvement, ensuring that Algerian civil protection services are well-prepared for potential future events.
