Criminal Network Selling Fake Car Deals Busted in Eastern Algeria

Um El Bouaghi, Algeria – National Gendarmerie’s Research and Investigation Unit in Um El Bouaghi has dismantled a criminal network specializing in fraud and deception through social media platforms. The network allegedly lured victims with attractive offers on new vehicles.

According to a statement released by the Gendarmerie, the operation was launched following reports of citizens being defrauded via two distinct Facebook pages. These pages purportedly advertised fictitious deals on new cars and trucks, tempting potential buyers with installment plans and significantly reduced prices.

The modus operandi involved convincing victims of the legitimacy of the sale by issuing fake invoices and forged vehicle registration documents, which were sent via the Facebook pages. Victims were then asked to pay an initial installment, typically 10% of the vehicle’s total price, into a specified bank account.

Once the initial payment was made, the statement continued, the customer would be blocked from the page, and the mobile phone number used in the scam would be deactivated and replaced with a new one to target another victim.

Following coordination with judicial authorities, an immediate investigation was launched, employing various modern techniques. The investigation led to the identification and arrest of the individuals managing the fraudulent Facebook pages, as well as the apprehension of 6 accomplices, including a minor. Authorities are still searching for 8 other suspects who remain at large.

The operation also resulted in the seizure of mobile phones, a computer, and a tablet used in the commission of the crimes. After completing all necessary legal procedures, the arrested suspects will be presented before the competent judicial authorities.
