Gmail has introduced a new feature leveraging the power of Gemini AI to summarize email threads. This update provides users with an efficient way to grasp the core content of lengthy email exchanges directly within the Gmail interface.
A new option will appear on the side of the screen when using Gmail on a laptop or desktop computer. This allows the Gemini AI model to condense email messages and extended discussions into concise summaries. This feature is rolling out to Gmail users across various regions globally.
According to Google, AI-powered summaries will be automatically enabled within Gmail’s smartphone and application versions. Users will have the option to disable the service if they choose. Initially, the feature will support the English language exclusively.
Users in the European Union, Japan, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom will have the option to opt-in by default. Other users can enable or disable the feature through their Gmail settings.
How it Works:
Google stated that summaries will appear at the top of email content where a summary is deemed most beneficial, such as in long email chains or messages containing multiple replies. Gemini will summarize all the key points in the thread, and any subsequent replies will be incorporated into the summary, with all summaries being continuously updated.
This integration promises to significantly enhance user productivity by reducing the time spent sifting through extensive email communications. The move highlights Google’s commitment to incorporating AI-driven solutions into its core products to improve the user experience.
The new feature is expected to be a welcome addition for Gmail users who frequently deal with high volumes of email and complex discussions. It remains to be seen how quickly Google will expand language support and refine the accuracy of the AI-generated summaries.
