Special Voting Underway in Iraqi Parliamentary Elections

Baghdad, Iraq – Special voting commenced today in Iraq’s parliamentary elections, with members of the Iraqi security forces casting their ballots. This early voting period precedes the general election and is specifically designated for personnel who will be deployed and unable to vote on the official election day.

According to the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC), the special vote includes over 1.3 million security personnel spread across 809 polling centers, comprising 4,501 polling stations. These stations opened at 7:00 AM local time.

“The Commission has opened 809 polling centers with 4,501 polling stations dedicated to members of the security forces, and all of them have started working since seven in the morning without registering any obstacles,” said Jumana al-Ghalay, spokesperson for the IHEC. She further emphasized the commission’s preparedness and commitment to a smooth voting process.

Al-Ghalay also confirmed that no malfunctions have been reported in the voting machines used for the special ballot. Technical teams are on standby to monitor the devices and address any potential issues that may arise. “The electoral devices are operating with high efficiency and readiness,” she stated.

In addition to security personnel, provisions have been made for internally displaced persons (IDPs) to participate in the elections. Al-Ghalay noted that 27 polling centers, encompassing 97 stations, have been opened for over 26,000 registered IDP voters. These centers will remain open until 6:00 PM, allowing ample time for eligible voters to cast their ballots.

The special voting period is a crucial step in ensuring broad participation in the Iraqi parliamentary elections and reflects the country’s commitment to a democratic process.
