Algeria considers Spain’s position on the Western Sahara to be an individual stance taken by the government of Pedro Sánchez, according to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
In an interview, President Tebboune stated, “We consider Spain’s position regarding the Western Sahara as an individual position from the Sánchez government. Spain has sided in the Western Sahara issue through secret actions that do not absolve it of its responsibilities.” He added that trade exchanges between Algeria and Spain are continuing, largely through the private sector of both countries.
President Tebboune expressed regret over the state of relations between Algeria and Morocco. “The relationship between Algeria and Morocco has reached a point of no return, and our position is a reaction,” he stated.
Regarding relations with Italy, President Tebboune described them as “strategic, historical, and very solid, extending back to the days of the revolution.” He added that the energy agreement signed with Italy “includes electricity, gas, and hydrogen, and we seek to implement it in cooperation with Europe.”
On the crisis in Ukraine, the Algerian President stated, “Algeria is qualified for a mediation role in the Ukrainian crisis, and we are one of the few countries that have sufficient credibility for that.” He confirmed that his planned visit to Russia, at the invitation of the Russian President, is still scheduled for May.
Touching on Algerian-French relations, President Tebboune noted, “Our relationship with France is fluctuating, and the Algerian ambassador will return to Paris soon.”
Furthermore, President Tebboune affirmed that “The Palestinian cause is the primary cause and is almost a domestic issue in Algeria.”
