London, UK – A large demonstration took place in London on Sunday, organized by the Sahrawi community in Britain and human rights activists, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara. The protest was held in front of the Moroccan Embassy.
Demonstrators voiced their strong opposition to the so-called ‘autonomy proposal’ and called for the implementation of international law, emphasizing the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence.
Participants waved Sahrawi flags and chanted slogans demanding an end to the Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara. They also called for the release of all Sahrawi political prisoners held in Moroccan prisons, including members of the ‘Gdeim Izik’ group.
Several British organizations supporting the Sahrawi cause participated in the demonstration, including human rights organizations and student unions. Representatives expressed their support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and urged the British government to pressure Morocco to stop its serious human rights violations in the occupied territories.
The demonstration concluded with the reading of a statement calling on the United Nations to expedite the organization of a free and fair referendum under its supervision, and reminding the international community of its legal and moral responsibility towards what they described as ‘Africa’s last colony’.
