Typhoon Fong Wong: Fatalities Reported, Millions Evacuated in Philippines

Manila, Philippines – At least two people have been confirmed dead, and approximately 1.2 million have been evacuated as Super Typhoon Fong Wong made landfall on the eastern coast of the Philippines earlier today. The typhoon, which covers nearly the entire archipelago, struck Aurora province on the main island of Luzon at 9:10 PM local time.

The arrival of Fong Wong comes less than a week after Typhoon Calmaygi devastated the region, leaving a confirmed death toll of 224 and causing widespread destruction. Concerns are high as Fong Wong is expected to bring strong winds and torrential rainfall across much of the Philippines.

The typhoon arrived from the east, packing winds of 185 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching up to 230 kilometers per hour. As a precautionary measure, the government’s civil defense agency reported the evacuation of approximately 1.2 million people before the storm hit. The Philippines is still reeling from the impact of Typhoon Calmaygi, the deadliest and most destructive storm of the year.

Authorities have announced the closure of schools and government facilities in many parts of the country, including the capital, Manila, on Monday. Nearly 300 flights have been canceled due to the severe weather conditions. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities.

The extent of the damage caused by Fong Wong is still being assessed, and further updates will be provided as they become available. The nation’s disaster response agencies are working to provide assistance to affected communities.
