German President Requests Clemency for Algerian Author Sansal

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has received a formal request from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier regarding the case of Boualem Sansal, the Algerian-French writer currently imprisoned in Algeria. The request specifically asks President Tebboune to consider allowing Sansal to travel to Germany for medical treatment, citing his advanced age and deteriorating health condition as primary concerns.

Boualem Sansal, a citizen of both Algeria and France, was previously awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade on July 1, 2025. He is currently serving a prison sentence and facing a financial penalty in Algeria following a conviction on unspecified charges.

President Steinmeier emphasized the humanitarian nature of his request, framing it as an opportunity for forward-thinking political leadership. He also highlighted the strong personal relationship he shares with President Tebboune, as well as the excellent bilateral relations between Algeria and Germany. He expressed hope that these factors would be taken into consideration when reviewing Sansal’s case.

The request from the German President puts pressure on the Algerian government to respond. The case of Boualem Sansal has drawn international attention, particularly in literary and human rights circles. The decision made by President Tebboune could have implications for Algeria’s image on the international stage.
