Luanda, Angola – Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço has pledged to make Algeria his first official state visit in 2026, signaling the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two nations.
The announcement came during a meeting in Luanda on Monday between President Lourenço and Azzouz Nasseri, Speaker of the Council of the Nation of Algeria, who delivered a message from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The message focused on enhancing cooperation between Algeria and Angola across various sectors.
During the meeting, President Lourenço expressed his profound appreciation for Algeria’s historical support for Angola’s liberation struggle against Portuguese colonialism. He conveyed his sincere fraternal greetings to President Tebboune and emphasized his desire to prioritize Algeria as his first international destination in 2026, underscoring the depth of the relationship between the two countries.
President Lourenço lauded Algeria’s unwavering commitment to the Angolan cause during its fight for independence, highlighting the significance of the historical solidarity.
Azzouz Nasseri, in turn, conveyed President Tebboune’s greetings to his Angolan counterpart and affirmed Algeria’s readiness to develop economic cooperation, aiming to elevate it to the level of the distinguished political relations that bind the two nations. He also expressed Algeria’s gratitude for Angola’s honoring of the late Presidents Ahmed Ben Bella and Houari Boumediene during the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of its independence.
The planned visit in 2026 is expected to further solidify the partnership between Algeria and Angola, fostering collaboration in areas such as trade, energy, and security. The commitment underscores the importance both nations place on their strategic alliance and shared interests in the African continent.
