The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reiterated its support for the return of constitutional order in Niger following recent events in the country.

A statement from the Algerian Foreign Ministry said that Algeria continues to support President Mohamed Bazoum as the legitimate president, and warned against any foreign military intervention in Niger.

The statement added that “the return to constitutional order should be achieved through peaceful means, in order to avoid a further escalation of insecurity and instability in Niger and the region as a whole, and to spare our peoples further suffering and tragedy.”

The Algerian Foreign Ministry also called for caution and restraint in the face of any foreign military intervention, which it said is a non-excludable option that could be resorted to.

The statement comes amid a political crisis in Niger, following the coup d’état that overthrew President Mahamadou Issoufou in February 2021. Bazoum was elected president in December 2020, but he was not sworn in until April 2021, due to the ongoing political crisis.

The Algerian Foreign Ministry’s statement is a clear warning to any foreign power that may be considering military intervention in Niger. Algeria is a close ally of Niger, and it is committed to the country’s stability and security.
