Sahrawi Organizations Demand Release of Civilian Prisoners

Several Sahrawi human rights organizations have renewed their calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all Sahrawi civilian prisoners held in Moroccan prisons. The organizations maintain that the struggle will continue until the Sahrawi people achieve their full rights to freedom, independence, and self-determination.

These demands were issued in statements following the release of prisoners Ibrahim Babit and Salah Eddine Sabbar, who had served what the organizations described as unjust sentences due to their political stances and participation in the peaceful defense of the Sahrawi people’s rights.

The League for the Protection of Sahrawi Prisoners specifically called for the immediate release of all Sahrawi political detainees and an end to all forms of judicial harassment. Human rights associations emphasized that the unfair sentences issued against Sahrawi students are a new chapter in the series of organized oppression allegedly practiced against the Sahrawi people.

The groups stressed the need to put an end to systematic violations both inside and outside prisons. They also condemned the reportedly inhumane manner of the prisoners’ release, which allegedly involved their transfer late at night, in harsh weather conditions, and far from the city. They characterized this as a continuation of the policy of revenge and abuse against Sahrawi activists, even after they have completed their sentences.

The coordinating mechanisms called on all Sahrawi national forces and people at home and abroad to continue mobilization and peaceful struggle until freedom and independence are achieved on all Sahrawi territories. The organizations remain steadfast in their commitment to advocating for the rights of Sahrawi prisoners and the broader quest for self-determination. The situation remains a focal point for human rights observers.
