Algiers, Algeria – Algeria and Somalia are embarking on a new era of strategic partnership, as announced following a meeting between President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Algiers. The leaders affirmed their unified stance on key issues and their commitment to expanding cooperation across various sectors.
President Tebboune welcomed President Mohamud’s visit, highlighting it as a testament to the shared desire to strengthen ties and exchange perspectives on matters of mutual interest. Discussions encompassed a wide range of areas, including energy, agriculture, fisheries, the pharmaceutical industry, and higher education.
Algeria will welcome 110 Somali students for university studies starting in the 2026-2027 academic year, in addition to providing new scholarships for vocational training, security, and defense, President Tebboune stated.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to address regional and international developments, including the situations in Palestine, Libya, Sudan, and the Sahel region. President Tebboune reiterated Algeria’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause and the right of the Palestinian people to establish an independent state within the 1967 borders, with Jerusalem as its capital.
He further called for a Libyan-led political solution that preserves the country’s unity and ends foreign interference. President Tebboune also reaffirmed Algeria’s rejection of any “blatant interference that undermines Sudan’s sovereignty and stability.”
President Mohamud expressed his gratitude for the warm reception in Algeria, acknowledging its history of liberation and resistance as an inspiration for Africa and the Arab world. He emphasized that the discussions were characterized by mutual understanding and resulted in an agreement to enhance cooperation in trade, education, security, defense, agriculture, and human capital development, aligning with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and Somalia’s Vision 2060.
New agreements and a joint committee will be established to ensure the effective implementation of these initiatives, solidifying the partnership between Algeria and Somalia.
