Uncertified Phones Pose Risks to Public Safety: Regulator Warns

DZWatch Exclusive: The Postal and Electronic Communications Regulatory Authority (ARPCE) has issued a stark warning regarding the purchase and use of uncertified mobile devices. In a statement released today, the authority highlighted the significant dangers associated with devices that have not undergone the necessary testing and do not meet current technical and regulatory standards.

According to the ARPCE, using uncertified devices can lead to critical communication failures. “These devices can cause interruptions in connectivity during crucial moments, preventing users from reaching emergency services,” the statement emphasized. The authority also noted potential compatibility issues with national network operators, which can result in the inability to access essential services.

The ARPCE specifically warned that uncertified phones may prevent users from contacting emergency short codes, such as those for the police, civil defense, or ambulance services. Beyond connectivity issues, the authority also raised concerns about the potential for degraded call quality.

Furthermore, the ARPCE cautioned about potential health risks associated with uncertified devices. These devices may exceed permissible radiation levels, posing a threat to public health. The regulator emphasized that certified devices undergo rigorous testing to ensure they comply with safety standards.

To guarantee the security, quality, and reliability of communications on national networks, the ARPCE urged consumers to verify that any device they purchase bears a permanent label stating either “Certified by ARPCE” or “Approved by ARPCE,” followed by the authority’s unique certification number.

“This label is a guarantee that the device is reliable and has passed the compliance tests conducted by the regulatory authority,” the statement concluded. The ARPCE is actively working to protect consumers from the risks associated with substandard and potentially dangerous mobile devices.
