Algiers – The Ministry of Education has announced significant changes to the assessment methods in primary schools, eliminating term-end examinations for specific subjects. The decision, outlined in Ministerial Instruction No. 270, dated November 11, 2025, concerns the organization of pedagogical assessments across all three educational stages for the 2025-2026 academic year.
This directive is part of a broader initiative to refine educational evaluation processes and provide more targeted support to students throughout their learning journey. The goal is to create a more effective and student-centered approach to education.
The new regulations introduce continuous assessment for practical subjects, including physical education, art, and music, at the primary level. Student performance in these areas will be evaluated based on their active participation in activities, practical skills, and expressive abilities.
Grades in these subjects will be determined by the student’s overall performance throughout the term. Factors such as participation, discipline, engagement, and effort within the classroom will be considered. Teachers will assign grades that accurately reflect the student’s actual involvement and progress.
Furthermore, third-grade primary students will no longer be required to take term-end examinations in French and English during the first term.
The Ministry emphasized that the elimination of term exams in these practical subjects aligns with their hands-on nature, which relies more on direct experience than written tests. This measure aims to reduce pressure on students and redirect their focus towards developing practical skills. It also allows more time for active learning and creative expression.
The instruction clarifies that assessment methods for all other primary school subjects will remain unchanged. Continuous assessment and term-end examinations will continue to be administered according to the established schedule for these subjects.
DZWatch will continue to monitor these changes and provide updates as they unfold.
