Iran withdraws from participation in the World Cup

Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Donya-Mali has determined the future of his country’s national football team’s participation in the World Cup scheduled for next summer in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The Iranian minister stated on Wednesday that Iran cannot participate in the 2026 World Cup after the United States killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Speaking to state television, the minister added: “Given that this corrupt regime (the United States) has assassinated our leader, we cannot under any circumstances participate in the World Cup.”

The United States and the Israeli occupation launched attacks on Iran, resulting in the death of the Iranian Supreme Leader, which led to the outbreak of a large-scale regional conflict in the Gulf region.
