Algiers – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has once again lauded Algeria’s ongoing efforts in providing assistance and care to Sahrawi refugees. This commendation comes as Ravindrini Menikdiwela, Assistant High Commissioner for Protection at the UNHCR, concludes an official visit to Algeria from November 11th to 14th, 2025.
Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lounès Magramane, met with Menikdiwela to discuss ways to enhance cooperation and coordination between Algeria and the UNHCR. The discussions focused on strengthening solidarity and shared responsibility to improve the living conditions of refugees, particularly Sahrawi refugees, and to bolster humanitarian programs designed to support them.
During the meeting, both parties emphasized the importance of intensifying joint efforts to mobilize international support for refugees, especially in light of current humanitarian and political challenges. Menikdiwela specifically praised Algeria’s long-standing humanitarian commitment, spanning over half a century. She highlighted that Algeria’s approach to hosting Sahrawi refugees exemplifies the values of solidarity and assistance that underpin its foreign policy.
This recent praise from the UNHCR adds to a growing chorus of international recognition for Algeria’s role in supporting refugees. Savina Ammassari, the UN Resident Coordinator in Algeria, recently noted the close collaboration between Algeria and UN agencies in providing support to Sahrawi refugees in the Tindouf camps, despite significant financial hurdles. She affirmed Algeria’s pivotal role in ensuring the continuity of this crucial aid.
Previously, the European Union delegation and the World Food Programme have also expressed their gratitude for Algeria’s efforts in meeting the needs of Sahrawi refugees, emphasizing that Algeria remains a model of humanitarian solidarity in the region. Algeria’s commitment to providing for Sahrawi refugees continues to garner international recognition.
