Commander Inspects ‘El Dhafer 920’ Corvette Ahead of UK Drills

Algiers, October 14, 2025 – Rear Admiral Mahfoud Benmeddah, Commander of the Algerian Naval Forces, conducted an inspection yesterday of the multi-mission corvette ‘El Dhafer’ (meaning ‘The Victorious’) with hull number 920. The inspection took place at the northern pier of the Admiralty at the Algiers Naval Base, located within the First Military Region.

This inspection precedes the vessel’s scheduled participation in joint naval exercises with the United Kingdom, slated to occur between October 19th and 24th, 2025, within British territorial waters.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of National Defence, these exercises aim to facilitate the exchange of expertise and enhance operational coordination between the naval forces of the two friendly nations. Key areas of focus will include maritime security, underwater combat and demolition techniques, and special intervention operations.

The Ministry emphasized that this collaboration reflects the commitment of the High Command of the People’s National Army to strengthening international partnerships and enhancing the capabilities of the Algerian Navy. The ‘El Dhafer’ corvette, a modern and versatile platform, plays a crucial role in Algeria’s maritime defense strategy.

The joint exercises with the UK represent a significant step in bolstering bilateral relations and fostering greater interoperability between the two navies. The Algerian Navy continues to actively engage in international collaborations to maintain regional security and stability.
