Brussels – The European Union has lauded the successful conduct of the recent parliamentary elections in Iraq. The EU views these elections as a pivotal opportunity for Iraq to strengthen its institutions, ensure inclusivity and accountability, and solidify its political future.
In a statement released earlier today, the EU expressed its appreciation for the efforts of all parties involved in organizing and facilitating the elections. This includes Iraqi authorities, the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC), and civil society organizations.
The EU noted that, following an invitation from IHEC, it deployed an election expert mission to analyze the electoral process. The mission’s findings will be presented to the Iraqi authorities in the near future.
Preliminary reports indicate a higher voter turnout compared to the 2021 and 2018 elections. The European Union now encourages all political actors to support the formation of a government that reflects the will of the Iraqi people.
The EU reiterated its unwavering support for Iraq’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. It emphasized that Iraq’s stability is increasingly important within the evolving geopolitical context of the Middle East.
The European Union stands ready to continue supporting Iraq as a partner in advancing its democratic and reform agenda and ensuring a peaceful future.
