TIMIMOUN, Algeria – The creation of film cities in southern Algeria reflects the government’s commitment to democratizing creativity and decentralizing cultural activities, according to the Minister of Culture and Arts, Malika Bendouda.
During a working visit to the region, Minister Bendouda inaugurated a new cinema center in Tinarkuk. She emphasized that these film cities aim to make the arts accessible to all Algerians, breaking away from the traditional concentration of cultural production in the north.
“This space, which has been renovated and is managed by the Algerian Center for Cinema, is ready for film production, making Timimoun a cinematic province par excellence,” the Minister stated. She highlighted Timimoun’s selection as the host city for the International Short Film Festival, opening this evening, which will allow guests to explore the region’s potential for film production.
The Minister further added that this cultural event embodies a vision to transform the south into a national and international cinematic destination. This strategy includes leveraging the region’s natural assets to build film cities as a strategic choice for creating a sustainable film industry. This initiative aims to foster a conducive environment for production, unlocking opportunities for the creative economy in the heart of the Sahara.
This development marks a significant step towards establishing Algeria as a prominent player in the global film industry.
