New York – Russia and China have reportedly voiced opposition to a United States-drafted resolution concerning the ongoing conflict in Gaza at the United Nations Security Council. The move comes as diplomatic efforts intensify to secure a lasting ceasefire and address the humanitarian crisis in the region.
Sources indicate that the US has circulated a revised draft resolution to Security Council members for the second time. However, the proposal is facing resistance from Moscow and Beijing, along with concerns from several Arab nations.
Russia has proposed its own draft resolution, reportedly inspired by the American version, with the stated aim of achieving a balanced and unified approach towards a sustainable cessation of hostilities. According to a memo seen by Reuters, the Russian draft requests the UN Secretary-General to identify options for an international force to stabilize Gaza. Notably, it does not include the “Peace Council” mechanism proposed by the US to manage the transitional period in Gaza.
The US Mission to the UN has urged the Security Council to proceed with the American text. A spokesperson for the mission stated that attempts to create division at this critical juncture could have serious and avoidable consequences for Palestinians in Gaza, adding the ceasefire is fragile.
Associated Press reports that the US draft resolution is facing opposition due to concerns about the absence of a role for the Palestinian Authority in the future governance of Gaza. Russia and China have also reportedly demanded the removal of the proposed Peace Council from the US draft.
