Algeria Battles Forest Fires, Evacuations Underway

Algiers, Algeria – Algeria is grappling with a series of forest fires across eight provinces, prompting evacuations in some areas. The most intense blazes are reported in the Tipaza province, located in the central part of the country.

The General Directorate of Civil Protection (Algerian Civil Defense) confirmed the occurrence of 22 separate fires as of 10:30 PM local time (9:30 PM GMT) on Thursday. The fires are spread across multiple regions, including Tlemcen in the west, Jijel and Tizi Ouzou in the east, and Boumerdes and Blida, near the capital city. Authorities have indicated that the most significant fire activity is concentrated in the mountainous regions of Tipaza province.

DZWatch has received reports and seen video footage depicting evacuations underway in the municipality of Hadjera Ennous, part of Tipaza province. Residents are being moved to safety as flames approach residential areas.

Firefighters are facing considerable challenges in containing the fires. Strong winds, exceeding 70 kilometers per hour, and high temperatures are exacerbating the situation and hindering firefighting efforts. Additional firefighting teams have been deployed from neighboring provinces to assist in combating the blazes.

The authorities are working to assess the full extent of the damage and ensure the safety of the affected populations. Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
