United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the arson attack on the Al-Haja Hamida Mosque, located in the Salfit Governorate of the occupied West Bank.
The condemnation was delivered by UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric during a press briefing on Thursday evening. Dujarric stated that the Secretary-General unequivocally condemns the attack on the mosque, expressing deep concern over the incident.
“Such violent acts and the desecration of religious sites are utterly unacceptable,” Dujarric emphasized, adding that places of worship must always be respected and their protection guaranteed.
Dujarric further clarified that Guterres “condemns all settler attacks on Palestinians and their property in the occupied West Bank, and stresses that such incidents are part of a growing pattern of extremist violence that is escalating tensions.” He called for accountability for those responsible for the arson.
The Secretary-General’s statement underscores the UN’s continued concern regarding violence in the West Bank and the need to uphold the sanctity of religious sites. The UN continues to monitor the situation closely and calls for de-escalation and adherence to international law.
