Beirut, DZWatch – Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun yesterday called for the immediate release of Lebanese prisoners and detainees held by Israel. The President emphasized the urgency of the situation, particularly for those individuals detained after the cessation of hostilities in southern Lebanon in November 2024, while they were inspecting their homes and properties.
President Aoun made these remarks during a meeting with Nicolas Von Arx, the Regional Director for the Middle East at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), who is currently visiting Beirut.
The President specifically requested that the ICRC “work to provide information on the conditions of these prisoners and ensure their well-being,” stressing that “their release is a priority for the Lebanese state, which cannot abandon its citizens.” He affirmed the Lebanese government’s commitment to securing the freedom of its citizens held abroad.
Von Arx, in turn, outlined the ICRC’s ongoing efforts to support Lebanon during its “difficult circumstances.” He noted that ICRC delegations have conducted assessment visits to several Lebanese regions affected by the Israeli aggression, examining the damage inflicted on homes, properties, land, and orchards. He also mentioned the reports that the committee will prepare regarding these visits.
The Lebanese government views the release of its detained citizens as a matter of national importance and continues to pursue diplomatic avenues to secure their return. The ICRC plays a crucial role in facilitating communication and ensuring the humane treatment of prisoners in conflict zones.
