Moscow has escalated its rhetoric towards the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), with a stern warning issued today by Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. She asserted that any attempt by NATO to attack Russia would be met with a response “using all available means.”
Zakharova stated in a press briefing that “merely considering an attack on Russia is strategic madness,” adding that Moscow would take all necessary measures to defend its sovereignty if faced with any direct threat. She emphasized that Russia has no plans to attack any NATO member state.
However, Zakharova said that the increasing military activity of NATO near Russian borders necessitates the strengthening of security measures. This statement follows remarks made just a day earlier by Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu, who cautioned that certain European nations within NATO might be contemplating “complex provocative scenarios” against Russia. Shoigu suggested that Western intelligence agencies possess experience in executing such operations.
Referring to a prior statement by the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), Shoigu elaborated that Moscow possesses information indicating Western plans to orchestrate a large-scale subversive operation. This operation, he claimed, could result in casualties among Ukrainian citizens and citizens of European Union countries, with Russia subsequently being blamed.
These pronouncements arrive amidst heightened tensions between Moscow and NATO countries, stemming from the conflict in Ukraine and reciprocal military movements along the eastern borders of Europe. The situation remains highly volatile.
DZWatch will continue to monitor developments in this critical situation.
