Madrid Rally Champions Sahrawi Right to Self-Determination

Madrid, Spain – A large demonstration took place in Madrid today, with members of the Sahrawi diaspora and their supporters marching in solidarity with the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. The demonstration coincided with the 50th anniversary of the Madrid Accords, a tripartite agreement that protesters strongly condemned.

Participants voiced their unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s pursuit of independence and the establishment of a sovereign state in Western Sahara. The rally served as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for self-determination in the region.

Demonstrators carried banners and chanted slogans calling for a just and lasting resolution to the Western Sahara conflict. They emphasized the importance of international law and the need for a free and fair referendum to allow the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to choose their own future.

The Madrid Accords, signed in 1975, are viewed by many Sahrawis as a betrayal of their aspirations for independence. The agreement transferred administrative control of Western Sahara from Spain to Morocco and Mauritania, a move that sparked conflict and displacement.

The protest underscores the continued relevance of the Western Sahara issue on the international stage. The Sahrawi people, with the backing of numerous international organizations and advocacy groups, remain committed to achieving their right to self-determination. The rally in Madrid sent a clear message that the quest for a just and peaceful resolution to the conflict will continue until the Sahrawi people are able to freely determine their own destiny.
