Saudi Journalist Denies Disparaging Remarks About Algerian Team

Recent hours have seen significant controversy surrounding alleged statements made by a Saudi journalist, purportedly calling for the cancellation of a friendly match between the Saudi and Algerian national football teams. The controversy erupted after audio clips circulated on social media platforms, claiming the journalist had requested the substitution of Algeria with a different opponent. The supposed rationale was that the Saudi team, following their victory over African champions Ivory Coast, had reached a level where facing a team deemed “less competitive” – as the reports suggested – would not be beneficial for their preparations.

These posts sparked considerable reaction among fans, amplified by rapid and widespread sharing.

Amidst the uproar, the Saudi journalist addressed the allegations, categorically denying the circulating statements. He affirmed that he never stated the Algerian team was unworthy of facing the Saudi team, nor did he advocate for cancelling the friendly match. “That’s incorrect, I never said that,” he stated explicitly.

He further clarified that claims regarding his assessment of the Algerian national team’s level or his comments about their potential exit from the Africa Cup of Nations group stage were fabricated and falsely attributed to him.

The journalist pointed out that his last media appearance was on the “Action with Walid” program, where he clearly expressed his support for playing friendly matches against strong teams like Algeria and Ivory Coast. He considered these choices ideal for the Saudi team’s current preparations, stating, “Ivory Coast and Algeria are appropriate choices, and these are the types of opponents I want the Saudi team to face.” He emphasized that his actual position is entirely contrary to what has been circulating.

The journalist expressed his dismay at the manipulation of his statements, labeling it as “mere media fabrication.” He added, “A voice that isn’t mine and words that aren’t mine have been pieced together.”
