Gaza: Rains Worsen Humanitarian Crisis, Aid Blocked

Gaza City – Torrential rains have exacerbated the already dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, leaving thousands of displaced residents struggling amidst flooded shelters and dwindling resources. Local authorities and residents describe the situation as catastrophic, with the downpour rendering a vast majority of temporary shelters uninhabitable.

According to Gaza’s government media office, an estimated 93% of tents are now unfit for habitation due to the heavy rainfall. The Civil Defense reported receiving hundreds of distress calls but, hampered by severe fuel shortages and a lack of essential equipment, is unable to provide adequate assistance. A spokesperson for the Civil Defense emphasized the urgent need for at least 300,000 tents to address the growing crisis.

Thousands of displaced individuals are now exposed to the elements, lacking even basic shelter. Meanwhile, reports indicate continued military activity, with ongoing demolition of buildings and gunfire in areas north of Rafah and Khan Younis.

The situation in Gaza City mirrors the crisis in the south and north. Reports suggest significant portions of the city are under military control, forcing residents into overcrowded camps and makeshift shelters that offer little protection from the rain. Many are living in damaged homes, fearing collapse, as happened during previous winter storms.

The government media office in Gaza highlights the intensifying suffering as winter sets in. The combination of severe weather and the ongoing crisis is pushing approximately 1.5 million displaced people to the brink, struggling to survive in inadequate tent encampments.

Despite a ceasefire agreement reached weeks ago, humanitarian provisions have not been fully implemented. Access to essential supplies, including desperately needed tents, remains restricted.
