The death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco on Friday has surpassed 2,800, with more than 2,500 people injured, according to the Moroccan government.

The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 6.8, struck the High Atlas Mountains, about 80 kilometers south of Marrakech. Most of the deaths were in rural areas, where many homes and buildings were made of mudbrick and were easily destroyed.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with search teams from Britain, Spain, and Qatar assisting the Moroccan military. However, hope of finding survivors is fading.

International aid groups have warned that Morocco faces a huge challenge in supplying help to the estimated 300,000 people affected by the earthquake. The government has said that it will need billions of dollars in aid to rebuild the affected areas.
