A powerful storm has caused widespread flooding in eastern Libya, killing at least 2,000 people and leaving thousands more missing, according to authorities.

The storm, named Daniel, has been battering the region for two days, bringing heavy rains, strong winds, and flooding. The worst-hit areas include the cities of Derna, Bayda, and Benghazi.

The eastern government, based in Benghazi, has declared a state of emergency and called for international aid. The United Nations has said it is sending a team to assess the situation.

The floods have caused widespread damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure. They have also displaced thousands of people.

The storm is a further blow to Libya, which is still recovering from a civil war that ended in 2020. The country is currently divided between two rival governments, one based in Tripoli and the other in Benghazi
