The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) is reportedly intensifying efforts to mitigate Cristiano Ronaldo’s suspension following his recent sending-off in the match against Ireland. The federation hopes to ensure the star’s availability for the potential opening match of the 2026 World Cup, assuming Portugal qualifies directly.
The controversial red card stemmed from an incident between Ronaldo and an Irish player away from the main play. The referee initially issued a yellow card but then consulted VAR, ultimately changing the decision to a straight red.
Portugal’s coach, Roberto Martinez, revealed that the FPF, led by President Pedro Proença, is compiling a comprehensive legal case to present to FIFA. The aim is to reduce or even overturn the suspension entirely. “The President of the Federation is personally overseeing the file, and we have strong evidence to suggest that the dismissal was unwarranted,” Martinez stated.
The Portuguese appeal hinges on pre-match comments made by the Irish coach, who alluded to Ronaldo’s influence on referees. The FPF views this as an attempt to create undue psychological pressure during the game. Martinez also emphasized that Ronaldo was subjected to persistent physical challenges from the early stages of the match, contributing to his frustration before the disputed incident. He argued that the play did not involve the kind of violent conduct meriting a straight red card.
This marks the first red card in Ronaldo’s extensive international career, spanning 226 appearances. Portugal hopes for a favorable decision before the World Cup. A confirmed three-match ban could potentially deprive the national team of its captain’s services at the start of the global tournament. The FPF is confident that FIFA will review the evidence fairly.
The outcome of the appeal remains uncertain, but Portugal is determined to fight for its captain’s participation in the upcoming World Cup.
