At least 120 people were injured, the majority of whom were police officers, during demonstrations in Mexico City on Saturday. The protests, largely organized by members of “Generation Z” via social media, were sparked by concerns over drug cartel violence and the security policies of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration.
Sheinbaum, who assumed office in October 2024, initially enjoyed approval ratings exceeding 70%. However, recent assassinations, including one in Michoacan state, have fueled criticism of her security strategy.
Mexico City Security Chief Pablo Vasquez told reporters that the protests remained largely peaceful for several hours before a group of masked individuals initiated acts of violence. He reported that 100 police officers sustained injuries, with 40 requiring hospital treatment for bruises and lacerations. An additional 20 protesters were also injured.
Authorities arrested 20 individuals on charges including theft and assault, with one arrest stemming from an alleged attack on a journalist, according to Vasquez.
Many protesters displayed a pirate flag adopted from the popular Japanese manga series “One Piece,” which has become a symbol of global youth protest. Others carried signs bearing the slogan “We are all Carlos Manzo,” a reference to the mayor of Uruapan, Michoacan, who was assassinated on November 1st after leading a campaign against drug cartels. Several demonstrators wore hats resembling Manzo’s, though the mayor’s widow has distanced herself from Saturday’s protests.
Earlier in the week, Sheinbaum questioned the motives behind the demonstration, suggesting at her regular morning press conference that the call for protest was “disorganized” and “paid for.” She further alleged that “this is a movement backed from abroad against the government.”
Protesters gathered in front of the National Palace in Mexico City, where Sheinbaum resides, and damaged some of the metal barriers surrounding the building. Police protecting the palace deployed tear gas.
