Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune appointed Abdulhafid Bakhous as the new director general of customs on Tuesday, replacing Noureddine Khalidi, whose term was terminated.
Bakhous is a career military officer who has served in a number of senior positions, including director of foreign relations and cooperation at the Ministry of Defense. He was promoted to the rank of major general in July 2022.
Bakhous is a graduate of the Military Academy of Cherchell and holds a master’s degree in international relations from the University of Algiers.
His appointment comes at a time when Algeria is facing a number of challenges, including a growing trade deficit and a smuggling crisis.
