Algiers, October 18, 2025 – Algeria has achieved the top ranking in North Africa and the Arab world in the 2026 edition of the QS Arab Region University Rankings, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
A ministry statement released Saturday highlighted the significant progress made by Algerian universities. “The results of the 2026 QS Arab Region University Rankings demonstrate the strong advancement of national higher education institutions,” the statement read.
Notably, the number of Algerian institutions featured in the rankings has seen a substantial increase. “A total of 46 Algerian higher education institutions were ranked, compared to 17 in the 2025 edition and 14 in 2024,” the ministry noted.
This achievement places Algeria first among North African and Arab nations in terms of the number of ranked universities. The University of Annaba was recognized as the top-ranked institution within Algeria. “The University of Annaba has made a significant leap from last year’s ranking of 161-170,” the statement added.
The Ministry emphasized that this ranking reflects the ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of education and the visibility of scientific research at both regional and international levels. This is achieved through the strategic positioning of national higher education institutions in various global rankings.
The QS Arab Region University Rankings is an annual regional ranking published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a global higher education think-tank. It aims to evaluate and compare the performance of higher education institutions in the Arab region. The QS ranking system employs a comprehensive framework incorporating ten key indicators, each representing a fundamental aspect of university performance and competitiveness. These indicators include academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, research citations, proportion of international faculty, and proportion of international students.
The ministry concluded by reiterating its commitment to further strengthening Algeria’s higher education sector and enhancing its global standing.
