Algerian Dates Officially Recognized by Global Food Standard

Algiers – Algeria has achieved a significant milestone on the international stage. The unique characteristics of Algerian dates have been officially incorporated into the final version of the Codex Alimentarius standard for fresh dates.

This achievement was announced during the 48th session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, held at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome from November 10th to 14th, 2025.

This decision marks a pivotal moment, culminating Algeria’s efforts to champion the identity of its dates and highlight their distinctive qualities before international expert committees. This long-term initiative aims to safeguard the reputation of the national product and enhance its value in the global market.

The preparation of the dossier involved a joint ministerial team comprising experts from the Ministry of Internal Trade and Regulation of the National Market, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Fisheries, and specialists from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

Throughout the sessions and consultations, this team provided precise technical and scientific contributions, successfully establishing the specific qualities of Algerian dates, particularly Deglet Nour, within the accepted international standards.

The adoption of this specification represents a strategic gain that will contribute to expanding the presence of Algerian dates in foreign markets. It will also enhance their competitiveness and solidify global recognition of their quality, thereby reinforcing their position as one of the most important national agricultural products with high added value. This recognition is expected to boost Algerian exports and strengthen the country’s agricultural sector.
