October 18, 2025 – Heavy rainfall and rising floodwaters have caused significant disruption across several Algerian provinces, resulting in one fatality and the displacement of multiple families, according to the General Directorate of Civil Protection.
In the province of Relizane, civil protection units recovered the body of a 27-year-old man who was swept away by the overflowing Oued Sehel Keri river in the Ziyaine area, Sidi M’hamed Ben Ali municipality. The victim had been the subject of a search operation in the Oued Sehel Keri, near Ain Merane in Chlef province. The body was transported to a local clinic in Sidi M’hamed Ben Ali.
The impact of the severe weather extends to other regions. In M’sila province, specifically in the municipality of Maârif, National Road 45 is currently blocked at the entrance to the town due to overflowing river waters. Emergency services also responded to reports of accumulated rainwater inside a home in the El Hawadi hamlet, Ain Khadra municipality.
In Ghardaia province, the municipality of Metlili witnessed civil protection units pumping rainwater from two residences in the El Batha neighborhood and from staff quarters at the 18 February Hospital. A person trapped in a large refrigerated truck attempting to cross National Road 01 was rescued after being stranded by rising floodwaters. Authorities also drained rainwater from a home in the El Bordj neighborhood, Sebseb municipality.
The province of Bouira, specifically the municipality of Bechloul, reported the drainage of rainwater from seven homes in the city center following the overflow of the Oued Bechloul river. In Boukadir, Chlef province, four nomadic families were evacuated from areas surrounded by floodwaters, and approximately 180 head of sheep were rescued. The Civil Protection continues to monitor the situation and provide assistance to affected communities.
