Cabinet Meeting: New Provinces, Wage Hikes, and Infrastructure Projects

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune chaired a meeting of the Council of Ministers, focusing on regional development, economic projects, and public welfare. Key outcomes included the approval of elevating several administrative districts to full provincial status and directives for improving public services.

New Provinces Approved

The Council of Ministers approved the promotion of eleven administrative districts in the High Plateaus and Southern regions to full-fledged provinces. This significant decision aims to boost local governance and development. The districts slated for upgrade are: Aflou, Brika, Ksar Chellala, Messaad, Ain Oussera, Boussaada, El Bayadh Sidi Cheikh, El Kantara, Bir El Ater, Ksar El Boukhari, and El Aricha. President Tebboune instructed immediate completion of administrative procedures in coordination with both houses of Parliament.

Tindouf-Bechar Railway Inauguration Set

President Tebboune instructed the Minister of Public Works to prepare for the inauguration of the Tindouf-Bechar railway line in January 2026. This railway, running through the heart of the Sahara, is considered a major national achievement, paving the way for a new era of economic development in Algeria. The President envisions the inauguration as a celebratory event marking Algeria’s progress.

Other Key Directives

The President issued several other directives, including:

  • Launching an investigation into the recent wildfires that affected multiple regions simultaneously.
  • Instructing the Minister of Finance to prepare a draft proposal for raising the minimum wage.
  • Tasking the Minister of Finance with drafting a proposal to increase unemployment benefits.
  • Emphasizing the need for continuous security and cleanliness monitoring in public spaces across all provinces.
  • Mandating public and private transportation operators to maintain cleanliness standards, particularly in Algiers and tourist destinations.

The meeting also reviewed progress on the Gara Djebilet iron ore mine project and the construction of the 500-bed University Hospital in Constantine, as well as the procurement of specialized equipment for the Digitalization Development Support Institution.
