French FM Hails Release of Sansal as Rebuke to Hardliners

Berlin, Germany – French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced on Sunday that Franco-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal could return to France “in the coming days,” emphasizing that his release constitutes a “resounding criticism of the hardline approach” in managing relations with Algeria.

Barrot, speaking in an interview, stated that Sansal is currently at the French Embassy in Berlin. “Based on the results of his medical examinations, we hope to see him return to France soon,” he added.

Sansal’s release follows a year of imprisonment in Algeria and occurs amidst a tense diplomatic period between the two countries. His release was facilitated after Algeria agreed to a German request for clemency on humanitarian grounds.

The French Foreign Minister hailed the decision as “a victory for French and German diplomacy,” clarifying that it represents “a clear rebuke of the hardline tactics and insults that lead to nothing.”

Barrot rejected directly addressing comments made by former French Minister Bruno Retailleau, who previously expressed regret that his “hardline stance” towards Algeria was not adopted by the Foreign Ministry or the Élysée Palace.

DZWatch understands that Barrot expressed his hope for continued dialogue with Algeria “on the basis of clear demands, and defending our interests while respecting Algerian sovereignty.” This suggests a shift in approach from some factions previously advocating for a more confrontational relationship.

The release of Sansal, a prominent literary figure, is expected to ease some tensions and potentially pave the way for renewed diplomatic efforts between France and Algeria.
