Algeria Urges Action to Break Cycle of Hunger and Conflict

New York (United Nations) – Algeria has emphasized the urgent need to break the vicious cycle linking hunger and conflict to safeguard international peace and security. The statement was delivered on Monday by Amar Bendjama, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, during a session at the UN headquarters in New York.

Ambassador Bendjama stressed that addressing the root causes of both hunger and conflict is paramount to achieving lasting global stability. He highlighted the devastating impact of conflict on food security, leading to displacement, disruption of agricultural production, and increased vulnerability of civilian populations. Conversely, he noted that food insecurity and scarcity can exacerbate existing tensions and contribute to the outbreak or escalation of conflicts.

“Breaking this cycle requires a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach,” Bendjama stated. “We must address the underlying drivers of conflict, promote inclusive governance, and invest in sustainable development to create resilient communities capable of withstanding shocks.”

Algeria reaffirmed its commitment to working with all stakeholders, including member states, international organizations, and civil society, to protect civilians, uphold international humanitarian law, and support lasting and just peace around the world. The North African nation reiterated its dedication to promoting dialogue and mediation as tools for conflict resolution and emphasized the importance of investing in long-term solutions that address the root causes of instability.

Algeria’s call to action comes at a time of growing concern over the rising levels of food insecurity and conflict globally, with numerous regions facing unprecedented humanitarian challenges. The country’s emphasis on the interconnectedness of these issues underscores the need for a coordinated and integrated response from the international community.
