Algeria Backs Gaza Ceasefire, Palestinian Right to Self-Determination

Algeria has voiced its strong support for the continuation of the ceasefire in Gaza and the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to self-determination. Ambassador Amar Bendjamaa, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, addressed the Security Council during a session focused on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question.

Ambassador Bendjamaa stated that the recent Security Council resolution concerning Gaza aims to implement a comprehensive plan supported by all parties. He emphasized that lasting peace in the Middle East hinges on guaranteeing justice for the Palestinian people, who have waited decades to establish their independent state.

“Algeria actively participated in the negotiation of this resolution on behalf of the Arab Group, in close coordination with Palestinian representatives,” Ambassador Bendjamaa explained. “We introduced what we considered necessary amendments to ensure balance and integrity in the draft text. Some of these proposals were adopted, and we continued to engage until the end, both on behalf of the Arab Group and in our national capacity, to incorporate elements that we believed would improve the draft resolution.”

He further noted that the Palestinian Authority, at its highest levels, welcomed the initiative and supported the call for the resolution’s endorsement. “We fully respected the choices and decisions of the Palestinian people and their representatives,” he affirmed.

Ambassador Bendjamaa revealed that Algeria voted in favor of the resolution, supporting its primary objectives: preserving the ceasefire and creating favorable conditions for the Palestinian people to exercise their right to self-determination and establish their state.

The Algerian representative also stressed the urgent need to allow the entry and distribution of humanitarian aid throughout Gaza, under the supervision of UN agencies and relevant humanitarian organizations. He highlighted the dire conditions faced by Gazans due to the conflict and emphasized that the time has come to begin reconstruction with the support of the international community and global financial institutions, including the World Bank.

In closing, Ambassador Bendjamaa affirmed Algeria’s readiness to assume its responsibility and contribute to efforts aimed at rebuilding civilian infrastructure in Gaza, for the benefit of the Palestinian people. Algeria remains committed to supporting a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. This includes advocating for a two-state solution with East Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state.
