Algeria Unveils Sweeping Media Reform Strategy

Algiers, November 18, 2025 – A comprehensive national strategy to modernize Algeria’s media sector is underway, according to Communications Minister Zouhair Bouamama. Addressing the People’s National Assembly’s Committee on Culture, Communication, and Tourism on Monday, Minister Bouamama outlined the key features of the ambitious plan, emphasizing a “profound transformation” guided by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directives.

The new media policy centers around three core pillars: assessment, modernization, and digitalization. The initiative aims to enhance national media outlets while safeguarding freedom of expression within the bounds of national values and identity.

Minister Bouamama stressed the ongoing efforts to fully implement recently enacted legal frameworks. This includes the establishment of regulatory bodies for both print and broadcast media, as well as the creation of a council dedicated to journalistic ethics. These measures are designed to bolster public trust and ensure responsible media practices throughout the country.

Several key initiatives are planned as part of the reforms. These include the regulation of the advertising and public opinion polling markets to ensure transparency and professionalism. The prestigious President of the Republic’s Prize for Professional Journalists will also be reviewed to further promote media excellence.

To keep pace with the digital age, the ministry’s central administration will undergo restructuring. Furthermore, a range of digital projects are planned to modernize the sector, including the digitization of documents and archives, the development of media monitoring platforms, the modernization of the Algeria Press Agency, and the upgrading of audiovisual archives.

These steps aim to create a state-of-the-art media ecosystem capable of adapting to global trends in news processing and information flow. Minister Bouamama underscored the significance of training programs for journalists and media professionals. He also highlighted the importance of fostering innovation through partnerships with universities and research centers, ensuring the development of skilled media professionals capable of producing high-quality content that promotes Algeria’s image both domestically and internationally.
