Algiers, October 19, 2025 – A significant setback has hit Algeria’s national football team, known as ‘Les Verts’ (The Greens), following news that key striker Amine Gouiri will undergo surgery. Olympique Marseille, Gouiri’s club, announced that the Algerian international will require an operation on his right shoulder, sidelining him for an estimated three months.
In an official statement, the French club stated that the decision was reached collaboratively between the player and the medical staff. The aim is to address Gouiri’s recurring shoulder dislocations and ensure a full return to peak physical condition as soon as possible.
The statement further detailed that the upcoming surgery will be followed by a rehabilitation period of approximately three months. This recovery timeline unfortunately means that Gouiri will be unavailable for selection for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025. This absence is a major concern for the Algerian squad’s chances in the prestigious tournament.
Olympique Marseille expressed their best wishes for Gouiri’s swift recovery, assuring him of their full support and comprehensive medical care throughout his rehabilitation. The club acknowledged Gouiri’s importance to both the club and his national team.
This marks the second consecutive AFCON tournament that Gouiri will miss. He was previously absent from the 2024 edition in Ivory Coast due to a knee injury, further highlighting the player’s unfortunate run of injuries during crucial periods for his national team.
Gouiri’s absence represents a considerable challenge for Algeria’s coach, who will now need to reassess his attacking options ahead of the continental championship. The team and its fans will be hoping for a speedy and complete recovery for the talented striker.
