Algeria Backs US Gaza Resolution: Key Considerations Revealed

Algeria has voted in favor of the United States-backed resolution concerning the situation in Gaza. The decision was based on several key considerations, according to Ahmed Attaf, Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, and African Affairs.

During a press conference held at the Ministry headquarters, Minister Attaf explained that the Security Council adopted a new international resolution regarding the Palestinian issue, specifically focusing on the situation in Gaza. He noted that the resolution, initiated by the United States, aims to implement what has been termed a ‘peace plan’ for Gaza.

Minister Attaf stated that Algeria’s vote in favor of the resolution stemmed from a series of objective considerations, primarily related to the core objectives of the resolution, the underlying motivations behind it, and the positions of key regional actors.

Regarding the core objectives, Minister Attaf emphasized that they fall within the scope of what can be described as the urgent priorities of the current stage, or the priorities following the aggression against Gaza. These priorities are fourfold:

  • First: Establishing a ceasefire agreement.
  • Second: Providing international protection for the Palestinian people.
  • Third: Enabling humanitarian relief efforts in Gaza without restrictions or conditions.
  • Fourth and Last: Paving the way for the launch of reconstruction in Gaza.

“These are the urgent priorities that are imposing themselves today,” Minister Attaf added, “and they are the same priorities that Algeria has consistently advocated for since the beginning of its term on the Security Council, three months after the start of the blatant Israeli aggression against Gaza.”

Minister Attaf believes that the adopted resolution provides a binding foundation for advancing these urgent priorities without compromising the fundamental principles of resolving the Palestinian issue.

He highlighted that the adopted resolution emphasizes the necessity of respecting the ceasefire and rejects any justifications for resuming the Israeli aggression against Gaza. Furthermore, the resolution establishes a precedent by calling for the deployment of an international force to maintain security and stability in Gaza, which he described as a significant development.
