In a recent press briefing, Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to key foreign policy principles, particularly concerning the situations in Gaza, Western Sahara, and Mali. He emphasized Algeria’s dedication to these issues within the United Nations Security Council.
Regarding the situation in Gaza, Minister Attaf stated that Algeria’s vote in favor of the recent Security Council resolution stemmed from urgent humanitarian priorities. These priorities include securing a ceasefire and halting the aggression against Gaza, ensuring genuine international protection for the Palestinian people, lifting restrictions on humanitarian aid efforts, and paving the way for the reconstruction of Gaza.
He further elaborated that the UN resolution marks a significant step towards deploying an international security force in Gaza. Algeria, during negotiations, insisted on including an amendment linking the resolution’s implementation to the strategic goal of establishing an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. Minister Attaf noted that Algeria’s position aligned with that of the Palestinian leadership, Arab nations, and Islamic countries, who, despite acknowledging certain shortcomings in the resolution, supported its adoption.
Turning to the issue of Western Sahara, Minister Attaf clarified that Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted last month, has not altered the fundamental nature of the dispute. He emphasized that the issue remains under consideration by the United Nations, specifically within the Security Council, the General Assembly, and the Committee on Decolonization. The Security Council has neither endorsed Morocco’s proposal nor recognized Rabat’s sovereignty over the territory. The ultimate resolution must guarantee the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.
Minister Attaf highlighted three key gains achieved by the Polisario Front in the new resolution: the renewal of MINURSO’s mandate, which is tasked with organizing a referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people.
Finally, concerning Mali, Minister Attaf reiterated Algeria’s commitment to promoting stability and finding a swift political resolution to the ongoing crisis. Algeria continues to advocate for a peaceful and inclusive solution that respects Mali’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
