Algeria to Produce Domestically Made Electronic Monitoring Bracelets

Algiers, November 19, 2025 – The Algerian Ministry of Justice, in collaboration with the Ministry of National Defense, is developing a new generation of electronic monitoring bracelets, according to Director-General of the Penitentiary Administration, Assad Zarb.

Speaking to the press on the sidelines of an international conference focused on rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates, organized in partnership with the German Foundation for International Legal Cooperation (IRZ), Zarb stated that the project is in its final stages and is expected to be completed before the end of the year. He emphasized that the bracelets will be manufactured entirely in Algeria.

This new system will allow for a broader application of electronic monitoring, potentially benefiting a larger segment of convicts and defendants undergoing investigation, without requiring pre-trial detention. The electronic bracelet, according to Zarb, represents an alternative measure available to judges, applicable both within the framework of parole and during pre-trial detention.

“Instead of requiring individuals to report and sign in every 15 days, they will be subject to precise electronic monitoring via the bracelet,” Zarb explained. This technology offers a more efficient and less restrictive method of supervision, potentially easing the burden on the penal system while ensuring compliance with judicial orders.

The development of these locally produced electronic bracelets signifies a step towards modernizing Algeria’s penal system and exploring alternative methods of incarceration and supervision. The initiative aligns with international trends towards rehabilitation and reintegration, aiming to reduce overcrowding in prisons and provide more effective means of monitoring individuals within the justice system.
