In a speech to the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 19, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune condemned any foreign military intervention in Niger. He also called for the restoration of constitutional order in the country.

“A foreign intervention in Niger, where the military has taken power, would destabilize both the country and the region,” Tebboune said.

The Algerian president reiterated his country’s support for the restoration of constitutional order through peaceful means. He also stressed Algeria’s rejection of the use of force and its categorical refusal of any foreign military intervention.

Algerian Mediation in Niger

In late August, Algeria launched an initiative for a peaceful political solution to the Nigerien crisis. The initiative calls for a six-month transitional period.

Niger Coup d’État

In late July, the Nigerien army announced the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum and the creation of the National Council for the Salvation of the Homeland (CNSP). The leaders of most Western countries and the regional organization of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have condemned the coup d’état.

ECOWAS has demanded that the military authorities “immediately restore constitutional order” and release Mohamed Bazoum to return him to office.

In early August, participants in an emergency meeting of the chiefs of staff of the armed forces of ECOWAS countries, held in Abuja, Nigeria, adopted a plan for a military intervention in Niger.

In response to this threat, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have created the new Alliance of the Sahel States. According to its charter, an attack against one of the member states will be considered an attack against all participants.
