Algiers, October 21, 2025 – Minister of Health, Mohamed Seddik Ait Messoudene, received Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, at the Ministry headquarters today. The meeting, attended by senior officials from the central administration, focused on strengthening cooperation between Algeria and the IAEA, particularly in the peaceful applications of nuclear energy in medicine.
According to a ministry statement, discussions centered on expanding collaboration in nuclear medicine, with a specific emphasis on the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Key areas explored included supporting training programs for medical professionals and technicians operating specialized equipment. The creation of reference centers, modeled after the cancer treatment center at Bab El Oued University Hospital, was also discussed as a potential hub for training and expertise sharing.
The possibility of training Algerian instructors in collaboration with IAEA experts was also addressed, with the aim of extending these initiatives across the African continent. Minister Ait Messoudene emphasized Algeria’s strategic commitment to its partnership with the IAEA, recognizing its crucial role in supporting nations and promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy. He highlighted Algeria’s readiness to share its expertise and knowledge with other African countries in this vital field.
Rafael Grossi commended the existing level of cooperation with Algeria, praising the competence of Algerian medical and scientific personnel. He affirmed the IAEA’s commitment to continued support for training and technical development programs in Algeria, acknowledging the country’s prominent position within the African continent.
