United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for increased solidarity with the Palestinian people and reaffirmed their right to self-determination and independence.
In a statement released Wednesday, marking the annual International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on November 29th, Guterres highlighted the immense suffering endured by Palestinians in recent years. He noted that the day arrives after “two years of immense suffering,” referring to the devastating situation in Gaza.
“Palestinians in Gaza are mourning the loss of tens of thousands of friends and family members, nearly a third of them children,” Guterres stated. He also addressed the widespread hunger, disease, and psychological trauma affecting the region, exacerbated by the destruction of schools, homes, and hospitals.
Guterres further condemned ongoing military operations, settler violence, settlement expansion, evictions, and demolitions, all contributing to the dire humanitarian crisis.
Remembering the hundreds of Palestinian humanitarian workers who have lost their lives, Guterres emphasized, “This is the largest loss of life in the history of the organization.” He also pointed out that the number of journalists killed during the conflict exceeds the number of journalist casualties in any conflict since World War II.
“Let us draw inspiration from the resilience and hope of the Palestinian people themselves,” Guterres concluded. “Let us stand in solidarity for the Palestinian right to dignity, justice and self-determination.”
The Secretary-General’s statement underscores the urgent need for renewed efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in the region, ensuring the fundamental rights and dignity of the Palestinian people.
