Algiers, November 20, 2025 – The General Director of Prevention and Health Promotion at the Ministry of Health, Professor Jamal Fourar, has stated that reported cases of scabies in schools are isolated and do not warrant public concern.
Speaking to the press on the sidelines of the National Day and Global Week for Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness in Algiers, Professor Fourar emphasized that measures are being taken discreetly by school health units, avoiding any exaggeration of the figures.
“These are isolated cases, and we are addressing them calmly and effectively,” he assured. “There is no need for alarm.”
Professor Fourar further reassured citizens that the condition does not pose a significant threat to public health. “This disease does not constitute a danger or a threat to public health. Every year, isolated cases are recorded in some schools,” he explained.
He added that the annual occurrence of scabies cases is “normal and should not cause anxiety. It is not a fatal disease. Even developed countries record cases in schools.”
Professor Fourar highlighted the importance of maintaining perspective and avoiding unnecessary panic. The health ministry is committed to managing the situation effectively and transparently.
DZWatch will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
His comments follow reports of 441 scabies cases across 52 educational institutions in nine municipalities within the province of Annaba, as disclosed by the Director of Health for the province in a press conference on Wednesday.
